While AI has numerous uses, on a handheld device, the benefits will be limited initially.
This is one of the key areas phone makers are working on with respect to AI. Using AI, the phone’s camera interface can detect the subject in the camera frame (landscape, food, fireworks etc.) and accordingly adjust the settings for the best possible image. AI can also identify facial features and automatically enhance them for a superior portrait.
There are translation apps available that let you take an image with text in one language to another language. However, these apps use Internet to upload the image for analysis and then translation. With onboard AI, your phone will be capable of translating different languages in real-time without the need of an Internet connection.
An AI system is designed to learn and adapt as it is used over time. On a smartphone, the AI will learn your usage pattern and start applying it on a day to day basis. You might be switching to silent when reaching office, switching on Bluetooth at home or closing background apps every few hours. AI will identify these patterns and automate these daily processes for you over time.
Apple iPhone X uses an AI based algorithm for its Face ID device unlocking system. Combined with Apple’s elaborate hardware, the AI system works to identify user’s face for security. Using AI processing, the iPhone X can identify face with changes such as spectacles or beard over time. Huawei has demoed its face recognition tech which they claim is superior to Apple’s.
Voice Assistants have been around for some time now. Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Alexa are all Voice Assistants that use AI to identify what you say and respond. Now , Voice Assistants have improved thanks to enhanced AI integration. They not just reply to queries but also performe tasks such as placing an online order, searching a particular song and typing a message.
Samsung S8/S8 Plus/Note 8
Samsung introduced its AI-powered assistant Bixby on its flagship devices and has been continuously improving it. Bixby learns from the user’s behavior and allows rich communication with the device. It can work with compatible apps on the device for enhanced functionality.
Honor View 10
The View 10 has the company’s latest Kirin 970 processor that has a dedicated Neural-Network Processing Unit (NPU). Thanks to the NPU, the Honor View 10 is currently the only phone capable of delivering all of the benefits mentioned above — secure face unlock, camera benefits, translations, enhanced automation and voice assistant.
Apple IPhone X
iPhone X is powered by Apple’s latest A11 Bionic chipset which has a Neural Engine for machine learning and AI processing. The neural engine enables the iPhone X to have a facial recognition system (Face ID) which is more secure than a fingerprint scanner and offers improved voice recognition for Siri.
Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL
Google worked with Intel to develop the Pixel Visual Core co-processor for AI processing that comes in the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. This co-processor enables the superior imaging capabilities from the Pixel 2 device’s cameras and even helps the Google Assistant understand the user commands/questions better.
