Four people have been arrested over the murder, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner MA Wahhab.
Tanim Khan, a third-year undergraduate and BCL activist, was hacked to death in a planned attack in the Tilagor area around 9pm on Sunday.
Several anonymous leaflets were distributed at Sylhet Government College and MC College calling for a strike to protest the murder on Monday morning.
BCL activists blocked the road in front of the Sylhet Government College from 10:30am to 11:30am.
“The BCL activists were blocking the road but the police were able to get them to move on after some discussions.”
“Four have been arrested over Tanim’s death. Police are looking for the others.”
“Classes and exams could not proceed according to schedule because the students called a strike on Monday,” said MC College Prof Nitaichandra Chandra.
He could not say who called the strike.
The offices of Sylhet Government College were closed.
According to local BCL leaders, district Awami League Youth and Sports Secretary Ranjit Sarkar and metropolitan Awami League education secretary Azadur Rahman have been involved in a feud. The two clashed over who would take the lead at the Jan 4 BCL anniversary.
Police believe Tanim was killed over the feud.
Tanim was a supporter of Ranjit and was killed in connection with the feud, former Sylhet BCL President Hiron Mahmud Nipu said.
